SUBMITTING an application to a tertiary institution can be quite exciting. However, receiving a letter of rejection from the university of your choice can leave you disappointed and stressed. Allow yourself to be disappointed, but remember that this is not the end of the world, but merely a setback.

WHY YOUR APPLICATION WAS REJECTED

Universities make admission decisions based on a competitive applicant pool. Not getting into a particular institution isn’t a personal rejection, but an outcome of many complex factors.

Many times, the institution doesn't have enough openings to accept all the applicants.

Zethu Mthimkhulu, media buyer at IQ Academy, says only a small percentage of matriculants will meet the entrance requirements, but this alone is sometimes not enough due to the high number of students who want to enrol at the institution.

“Unfortunately, the South African education system is set-up so that learners are led to believe that the only option they have after high school is to further their studies at a traditional university. Due to a lack of guidance, many learners do not know about other alternatives,” she says.
