Kay Burley has come a long way since her early days as a cub reporter on her local paper in wigan. The 56-year-old is now Britain’s top telly news anchor, having presented more hours of live TV than any of her competitors. Highlights have included the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte in 2013 and 2015. away from the cameras, Kay loves to relax at home in London with her son Alexander, 23, and her three Irish setters – Gordon, Paddy and Frank. Here, the delightfully down to earth Kay chats to Woman about fame, northern pride and being a working mum.

‘When I was covering the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte outside the Lindo wing of St Mary’s hospital, it struck me that the royals are always in the spotlight.

It’s very strange to have the world’s media camped outside a hospital waiting for you to go into labour, which is a terrifying and messy business. It was hilarious after Charlotte’s birth as Prince Charles noticed me when he Came to see the baby and said, ‘You’ve been here a long time.’ So that gave me encouragement that the 30-hour shift was worth it!’

‘Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money but we were still happy. now I’m mainly happy that I’ve got my health.
