Could Cabbage Prevent Cancer?

Eat your greens – they’re good for you. We all remember that common phrase uttered by our parents in our youth. and while we obliged (most of the time!), we never really knew why they were such an important part of our diets – until now.

Thanks to a study carried out at the Francis Crick Institute in London, scientists have discovered a direct link between eating cruciferous vegetables (that’s your leafy greens) and the production of anti-cancerous chemicals in your gut – meaning they could be the key to reducing the risk of bowel cancers.

Bursting with benefits

Someone in the UK is diagnosed with bowel cancer every 15 minutes, making it the fourth most common cancer in the country. ‘Aside from age, family history and digestive disorders, such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, the main risk factors are thought to be lifestyle related, and include smoking, excessive alcohol intake, being sedentary and a poor diet,’ says Matt Durkin, nutritionist for Simply Supplements.
