Would you ask an ex what went wrong?

No: ‘The answers I wanted were within me’

Cheryl Muir, 34, lives in Bristol.

My life was full of dating drama back in my 20s. I found myself doing the same things in relationships over and over again. The person was different, but the pattern was the same.

And after the inevitable break-up, I’d find myself contacting my exes for the elusive closure I felt that I so desperately needed.

I cringe about it now, but I thought that I had to call them if I had any hope of moving on. Only, it never gave me the answers I needed – if I got any answer at all.

What I know now is that I was giving my power away. I was choosing to not move forward, to stay in a state of emotional pain, while I stared at my phone and waited for them to reply.
