Every day thousands of people in the UK become victims of fraud – but there’s a simple way to stop it happening to you.
You might think you’d never fall for a scam, yet every 15 seconds someone is defrauded in the UK, * with financial fraud alone costing us £768 million in 2016. ** As banks use more sophisticated security, fraudsters are now increasingly targeting individuals.
The Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign puts the power back in our hands by raising awareness of how to spot fraud, and provides advice on how we can protect ourselves. So if you get any calls, texts or emails out of the blue asking for your personal or financial details, always stop, take five to think and then say, ‘My money? My info? I don’t think so!’
A typical scam might involve a call from someone who says they’re from your bank. They’re concerned by fraudulent activity on your account. They ask you to verify a supermarket shop. You know that’s correct. Bought an app for your phone? Yes, that’s OK.
Then they ask about a large attempted payment for flights. It’s a moment of panic – that’s wrong!
