The Body
by Bill Bryson (£9.99, Black Swan)
WHY Less self-help, more user guide, this book from celebrated author Bill Bryson, best known for his travel writing, is a brilliantly written and fascinating fact-filled guided tour of our bodies. We all have one, but few of us know how our body actually works. This book goes some way towards rectifying that. Learning about yourself and how you function has never been so much fun.
Why a wellbeing book can work
When life gets tough, it’s natural to seek guidance, and that’s when a self-help book can really help. ‘Often, when we are “stuck” with a problem or are unhappy, it’s because we have limited knowledge, a too-narrow viewpoint or a lack of practical ideas on what to do next,’ says wellbeing coach Alexandra Lees, co-founder of holistic health website wuweiwisdom.com. ‘Self-help books help overcome this by offering fresh and independent insights and tools for change. They can broaden our perspective, and motivate and inspire us.’
They also allow us to go at our own pace and are very affordable when not all of us have the money to see a therapist.
