Our lives have become very different in the past year. Most of us have changed the way we shop, travel and work. We’ve changed the way we take care of our health, too, and that’s set to continue, as we’re encouraged to look after ourselves better and adopt a lifestyle that keeps us both safe and healthy.
A range of new technologies – in addition to improvements in existing tools – will enable us to become more active participants in the care of our own health. Here are the gadgets you need to know about.
1 A step counter
Many phone apps and wearable devices now allow us to monitor and track key health factors, such as diet, drinking, smoking, sleep and exercise. Most of these also gently nudge us towards making positive adjustments to our lifestyles. The UK Chief Medical Officers’ Physical Activity guidelines recommend that adults should rack up at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking or cycling, each week. Walking briskly is about going faster than three miles per hour (100 steps per minute), and step counters are invaluable in helping us to speed up and encourage us to reach the target.
2 Digital thermometer
Many people still have old-fashioned mercury thermometers. These should be replaced by the more accurate digital ones – available from supermarkets and pharmacies. Get a stick thermometer (for use in the mouth or under the arm) and an ear thermometer (especially good for children).
3 Smart scales
Keeping an eye on your size and your blood pressure matters. If things change, it’s easier to take action quickly, preventing problems such as heart disease, diabetes or strokes.
