Is the Christmas Fairy the same as the Tooth Fairy, Mummy?’
‘No, Evie, I don’t think so,’ I replied.
‘So can we have both of them on the Christmas tree?’
Evie had been obsessed by the Tooth Fairy ever since her first lost tooth became a 20p piece on her pillow. She kept the coins in a little drawstring bag. Her dad told her five 20p pieces made a whole pound for her to spend, but no – those coins were magical and would never be spent.
Once Evie was in bed, I told Jake what she’d said. His eyes twinkled. ‘Better get another fairy from the fairy shop, then.’
It proved easier said than done. I searched high and low, but couldn’t find a Christmas Fairy in the shops. So when Evie got home from school I suggested we search online for a tooth fairy.
But they were mostly porcelain figurines, some attached to boxes to put teeth in. We had more luck with fairy tree ornaments, and eventually, Evie picked one out.
‘When will my tooth fairy come?’ she asked at breakfast the next day.
‘Goodness, have you lost another tooth already?’ Jake asked.
Evie frowned. ‘No, Daddy, I mean my tree tooth fairy!’
‘It’ll take a while,’ I told her. ‘The postman’s very busy at this time of year.’
