Venice has lost its charm for the power couple

Their summer appeared idyllic in every way. In late June, George and Amal Clooney returned to Venice, Italy – the impossibly romantic city where they wed in 2014 – and were seen taking a helicopter tour after walking hand-inhand near the canals.

Then, in July, they hosted friends, including the Obamas, at their spectacular home on Italy’s Lake Como, where they’d retreated for the summer with their adorable two-year-old twins Ella and Alexander.

They often dined out in nearby towns, travelling via speedboat. “Any time they were photographed, they were all smiles,” says a local.

But behind closed doors, it was a very different story, the source reveals. “George and Amal were fighting like crazy. Then, just weeks before their fifth anniversary, all of their problems came to a head and they got into another heated argument.”

It got so ugly, Amal, 41, told George, 58, she couldn’t take it anymore, took the twins and walked out, claims the insider. “George knew they had problems, but he still felt blindsided and was in tears – because he didn’t know if she was coming back.”
