While he often made fun of his reputation as a Romeo, the blond-maned larrikin was undoubtedly a hit with women - and well-loved for being a playboy on and off the pitch.

“He was so sweet - I mean, I'm a gay lady, but I can see the charm and it wasn't a bunged-on charm," says Magda Szubanski, 60, of shooting scenes with Shane when he did a cameo on classic Aussie comedy Kath & Kim in 2007.

"It was just a thoughtfulness and sweetness, and a kind of charisma that you can't manufacture. It is just who you are as a person - that radiated out of him." Dannii Minogue, 50, also described the late star in glowing terms and revealed the fellow Melburnian affectionately referred to her as "Disco".

"He was such a light and energy in the room," the singer wrote in her emotional tribute. “He was always lovely to my whole family. He knew that I didn't have a clue about cricket, but he liked that... So many great memories of an incredible man and true gentleman."
