The Things We Cannot Say is a dual-timeline novel – part set in occupied Poland during World War II, and part set in the modern day. The idea for the novel really started with my own ignorance about my family history. I knew my grandparents were Polish Catholics, and I knew they were forced from their homes by the war – but I had no idea how they came to call Australia home!
I started researching the impact of war on Poland and the story of Tomasz and Alina emerged in my mind. This book is a work of fiction, but there are parallels to my own family story in both narratives. It was a very difficult book to write, but I do think the family connection made it easier to imbue it with a personal feel.
