SOPHIE WELLS showcased a familiar hero and a superstar in the making at Hartpury. The seven-year-old St Schufro mare LJT Egebjerggards Samoa twice finished second to Paralympic gold medallist Don Cara M, before coming through to win the freestyle.
“Diana” has been with Sophie for two-and-a-half years, but this is her first full international season.
“We’re taking it a show at a time to see how we get on. She has done young horse classes, but she’d either be mega and get 80% or come last,” laughed Sophie. “But she has such a good mentality.”
Sophie chose to ride Diana in the freestyle over “Donnie”, to give the young mare some extra exposure. And although she was distracted at times, her quality shone through and Sophie completed a grade V hat-trick with 74.84%.
“I think she’ll be a team horse and a future grand prix horse too – she already has everything apart from the changes. I just have to ride her really well and do her justice.”

Rider Denies Doping After Team Loses Olympic Placing - Tine Magnus and the Belgian team said they do not know the source of the drug that caused the positive test
Olympic eventer Tine Magnus has denied ever doping after her Paris ride Dia Van Het Lichterveld Z gave a positive test at the Games. This means the Belgian team, which came fourth, has been disqualified. On 4 September, the FEI said the 10-year-old mare, owned by Kris van Vaerenbergh, tested positive for trazodone, which is listed as an antidepressant on the FEI's prohibited substances list.
