Australian Heeler, Red Heeler, Blue Heeler or Queensland Heeler - all original names of the Australian Cattle Dog as we know the breed today. The breed that was bred for the harsh terrain of the Australian Outback. A breed that is characteristic with high energy levels, a compact build with a keen sense of herding and agility, a lovable disposition and a coat that is unlike many others. The ACD is a rare sight but cute as ever, and a great watchdog, too.
ORIGIN: Going back to the 19th century, Australian settlers needed a sturdy dog that would be swift in rounding up their cattle on the vast ranches they possessed. Initially, dogs were brought from England but proved incapable of carrying out the duties of a herder, which is when, through cross-breeding, the right breed was developed, one that could be forceful with the cattle and withstand the rough weather of the Australian ranges. One such settler was Thomas Hall, who crossed blue-merle Collies with Dingos. The wild cattle were no match for these dogs that carried traits of the Australian Dingo in them. Blue Heelers came about from the colour of their coat while Queensland Heeler was from the region.
Today, down the centuries, we have the Australian Cattle Dog, accepted in 1980 by the American Kennel Club, as efficient as its ancestors albeit good with children and a loyal household pet.
DESCRIPTION: Take a look at those eyes, oval in shape, mostly brown but sometimes an ancient blue, and be captivated by that curious face which seems to always have a naughty tilt to it. Its cute and broad head sits at attention atop its compact and sturdy body with legs that are firm to the ground. The ears are always upright and the jaws carry a distinct strong appearance. The chest is deep and denotes power and the tail hangs low. The double coat of the ACD is its most striking feature.
