The Mahindra Thar has had a meteoric rise. More so, since the second generation was launched in 2020. The first generation Thar, while nothing great on tarmac, was a huge hit with offroading fanatics. The second generation Thar though had Mahindra widen its appeal, and now, the manufacturer wants to explore the Thar’s potential further with its 5-door version, the Thar ROXX. This is also a bid to position the Thar as a more lifestyle offering that is also bigger in size, more spacious and better-equipped. Mahindra also tells us there’s more to it than just the two extra doors.
Design changes begin from the grille, as the ROXX uses an all-new, six-slot grille that also integrates a camera for the 360-degree view system. DRLs are C-shaped, adding to the distinctive identity. Move to the sides and well, the first thing you’ll notice are the rear doors.
There’s a lot of distinctive design details here as well though, like the cut above the rear door that continues in a slanting manner onto the C-pillar. It looks very distinctive, and Mahindra tells us the slanting line is meant to give the Thar ROXX the appearance of a pick-up truck. The roof cannot be detached though, like say, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. I understand that would have added to complexities and also driven prices up. Another interesting detail are the rear door handles that sit on top and are not positioned conventionally.
