ANTICIPATION
The buildup to the 2024 Tiree Wave Classic brought with it the usual feelings I have had every year since my first one back in 2016, when I was thirteen. It's a brilliant mix of fear, excitement and anticipation. There are two things that keep me coming back and I know that they're the same for everyone else. The first is the community - I look forward to registration day every year because of the familiar mix of welcome hugs, handshakes and friendly smiles on weather-beaten faces. There's anticipation in the air, everyone yapping on about what the week will hold. Tiree is unique in that aspect, we can have the full range of wave sailing conditions hit us in a week and at the contest that means there's a slight air of unpredictability about it. In theory, there can be upsets at other venues, but the chances of someone other than the usual suspects winning Rhosneigr are a lot lower than in Tiree. And that's the second attraction of Tiree that makes it a mainstay on everybody's calendar. From the moment you get off that ferry and onto the much-wobbled-across single track roads, you don't know what the week will have in store for you.
