Toxicology testing is emerging as a critical field in India, driven by factors that highlight the need to protect public health, ensure product safety, regulate industries, safeguard the environment, and support legal and forensic investigations.
Rapid industrialization and the rising chemicals use across sectors have raised concerns about their potential health hazards. Adoption of modern agricultural practices with a resultant rise in pesticide usage too have contributed to these concerns. There has also been a surge in pharmaceutical manufacturing and consumption in India in the last 25 years. This growth necessitates an increase in drug trials and testing, which, in turn, raises the importance of toxicology testing in the country. "The occupational health concerns have gained significant traction, leading to rigorous monitoring of employee exposure to toxic substances," says Dr Marquess Raj, Zonal Technical Chief, Apollo Diagnostics.
Says Dr Pavan Asalapuram, Co-Founder, Empe Diagnostics, toxicology testing plays a critical role in identifying and quantifying the presence of toxins in the body. With the rising prevalence of illicit drugs, it enables early intervention and treatment, improving people's health. Dr Revathy K, a Consultant Pulmonologist, Holy Family Hospital, highlights its role in lung health, post-COVID. From identifying the toxicity of new-age products like e-cigarettes to assessing drug-induced lung toxicity and understanding the effects of air pollutants, toxicology plays a significant role in reducing diseases and protecting respiratory health.
