The global rise of Monkeypox disease, now widely referred to as Mpox, has become a serious public health concern worldwide since its outbreak in 2022. Initially, cases were reported in countries where the disease was not endemic, quickly escalating to a global scale.
As of August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 103,429 confirmed Mpox cases and 225 deaths across 121 countries. This widespread transmission has necessitated coordinated international efforts to curb the virus, leading to the implementation of various public health measures worldwide.
WHO’S RESPONSE
The WHO declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in July 2022, stressing the need for a global response to prevent further spread. WHO issued comprehensive guidelines recommending surveillance, laboratory testing, clinical management, infection prevention, and risk communication. The global strategy focused on early detection, isolation of cases, contact tracing, and vaccination of high-risk populations. Countries around the world have adopted these measures to varying degrees, tailoring their approaches to local needs and conditions.
