The field of medical imaging in India is witnessing a remarkable transformation with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies. The diagnostic imaging devices segment in India is expected to be $0.85 billion (Rs 6,967.70 crore, approximately) by 2027, growing from $0.66 billion (Rs 5,410.38 crore, approximately) in 2023, exhibiting a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.71 percent, according to data published by Statista. Providing some industry estimates, Dr Agam Shrivastava, MD Radiologist and Technical Head at SRL Diagnostics, says that the Indian Diagnostic Imaging Equipment Market will grow faster than the global average and expand by 12 to 15 percent annually during the next five years.
This growth is due to a rise in chronic diseases, technological advancements, an aging population, and greater expenditure on healthcare services. The MRI, CT scanner, USG, and X-ray currently account for over 85 percent of the industry, followed by Nuclear Imaging.
Adoption level in India
Dr Deepak Patkar, Head - Imaging, and Director - Medical Services, Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital, highlights that numerous start-ups have introduced cutting-edge applications aimed at addressing various radiology-related issues. This trend is likely to continue as AI and ML revolutionize the medical imaging field in India. Niraj Garg, Head of Digital and Automation at Siemens Healthineers India explains that Al in healthcare is transitioning from the stage of 'inflated expectations' to that of 'real-world productivity. Radiologists who adopt Al are likely to be ahead of their peers who don't use it.
