After the sudden death of Paul O’Grady last week, it was clear how incredibly loved and respected the comedian and presenter was. As heartfelt tributes poured in from fellow stars, devoted fans and even the royal family, social media was full of pictures of dogs, posted as a tribute to a legend who did so much to make us laugh and to promote the happiness of man’s best friend.
Again and again, people commented on how Paul, 67, was able to connect with anyone – human or animal – no matter their background. From Hollywood A-lister to golden retriever, he’d meet them all with a smile and his trademark cheeky banter.
Announcing his death, Paul’s husband Andre Portasio said, “It is with great sadness that I inform you Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening. We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life, you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion. I know he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
Celebrities paid tribute to their much-loved pal, whose cause of death has yet to be revealed. Lorraine Kelly said, “Such sad news. Paul O’Grady – funny, fearless, brave, kind and wise. Will be sorely missed. A really special man. I always think dogs are the best judge of character, and they ADORED him.”
