ETHICAL INVESTING

Whether you buy second-hand to reduce waste or own an electric vehicle to decrease emissions, it’s fair to say there is an emphasis on treading lightly. While you may put thought into what you consume, what about where you put your money?

As extreme weather events, climate change and poor working conditions are associated with some ASX-listed companies, investing in a corporation that’s actively minimising its impact on the world seems like a hard task.

That’s where ethical investing (also known as responsible or sustainable investing) can pay off – and according to Sharesies’ co-founder and director Brooke Roberts, more people are considering it.

“On Sharesies, the majority of our investors (73 per cent) believe it’s important that they invest in companies that are socially responsible,” Roberts says.

“As we become more conscious of our daily actions and the societal impacts they have, it’s great to see this transcend into investment decisions.”

So, what does it mean to invest ethically and how can you put your money where your heart is?

WHAT IS IT?
