He was under oath for eight hours. An emotional Prince Harry took the stand in a London courtroom on June 6 and 7 — becoming the first royal to do so in 130 years. The Duke of Sussex was subjected by intense grilling by lawyers in connection with his phone-hacking lawsuit against a British newspaper group. “Harry felt he had no choice but to testify because he believes it’s the right thing to do for the greater good,” a source tells In Touch. Harry flew to his home country for the trial after celebrating daughter Lilibet’s 2nd birthday at home in Montecito, Calif., with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their son, Archie, 4. “Harry was desperate to tell his truth and seek justice.”

That meant dropping a bombshell that has shaken his marriage to the core. “It was shocking to everyone how much of his testimony involved his deep regret over the end of his relationship to Chelsy Davy and how much he cared for her,” the source says of Harry’s six-year, on-off romance with the Zimbabwe native. Their relationship, Harry alleges in the lawsuit, was “doomed” because of invasive, unlawful measures taken by U.K. tabloids. “He talked so affectionately about her and made it sound as if they’d still be together today if not for outside influences, which is like a stab in the heart for Meghan. It’s such a massive betrayal.”
