As machine-made textiles increasingly dominate the market, the exquisite art of chikankari faces a significant risk of fading into obscurity, much like the once-celebrated Bengal and Madras chikankari. When I launched my label in 2010, my primary motivation was to preserve the craft in its truest form and ensure the continued legacy of handcrafted chikankari.
While the decline of Bengal and Madras chikankari serves as a poignant reminder of the urgency required to safeguard this delicate and ancient technique, at the heart of my label lies a profound dedication to preserving the intricate and timeless artistry of Awadh.
My journey into the world of chikankari began with a deep appreciation for couture and a reverence for the craftsmanship of my homeland. I was introduced to this craft through my mother-in-law, a social worker devoted to uplifting rural women in Lucknow.
Through her initiatives, she provided vocational training, empowering these women to become self-reliant, and fostering a sense of community among them. After years of witnessing her journey, I was captivated by the beauty of the craft and recognised the necessity of creating a platform that not only celebrates this traditional craft but also supports the artisans who sustain it. Hence, this mission is deeply personal. My label embodies a harmonious blend of my passion for fashion and the rich heritage of Awadh, while also ensuring that the artisans receive the recognition and support they truly deserve.
