Time stands still at Figueiredo T House, where Maria de Fatima Figueiredo de Albuquerque lives with her son Pedro, 430 years of history all around them. Built in 1590, Figueiredo House was a fresh start for the half of the Saraswat Brahmin Podiar family that moved south from Sancoale to escape the bubonic plague. They settled in the bucolic village of Loutilom, embraced Christianity, changed their name to Figueiredo and built a home that is deeply woven into the fabric of Goa's cultural heritage.
The palatial property was perhaps a prelude of good fortune for the Figueiredos, who rose in Goa's social and political circles as diplomats, parliamentarians, lawyers, academics and entrepreneurs. Quite possibly one of the largest homes in the state, Figueiredo House spans 50,000 sq. ft., a symbol of their status, wealth, values and worldly tastes. As the custodian of her ancestral home, Fatima honours the wishes of her predecessors to protect its heritage and the four centuries of memories it holds. Under her direction, Figueiredo House has been carefully restored, preserved and re-invented as a charming nine-room homestay, events venue and living museum.
