While there are around 5000 listed companies in India, the top 100 large-cap companies account for about 63% of the total market capitalization of USD 5.5 Trillion. Small-caps and mid-caps are about USD 1 Trillion each (about 18% each) – quite large even by global standards. The investable universe of small caps has significantly expanded. In 2020, the number of small caps with market capitalization of more than Rs. 2000 crore was about 220 – today the number is 800, an increase of 4x. The largest small cap used to be around Rs. 7000 crores in market capitalization – today it is around Rs. 30,000 crores.
If we apply filters of liquidity and quality, there are still more than 500 small-caps which are “investible” – a wide and vibrant range of stock, sectors and sub-sectors to choose.
