Power, Choice And Innovation

IT'S HARD NOT TO NOTICE the buzz surrounding electric vehicles (EVs). Headlines tout ambitious government goals, automakers announce new EV models weekly, and charging stations pop up across Malaysia like mushrooms after rain. At the forefront of this movement, BMW Group Malaysia is already recognised as the nation's leading premium electric car provider for the fifth consecutive year, with over 13,500 vehicles delivered in 2024—20.5 per cent of them electrified. And yet, in an unexpected move, BMW has chosen to start 2025 by unveiling five petrol-powered models across its BMW, MINI, and Motorrad brands.
At first glance, this decision might seem counterintuitive. Isn't the future of mobility electric? But BMW's strategy reveals a deeper understanding of the complexities of global and local automotive landscapes. Rather than hastily rushing towards an all-electric future, the company is advocating for "technology openness" and the "power of choice"—principles that may prove more sustainable in the long run.
BMW's position as Malaysia's EV leader is undeniable, with nearly 33,000 electrified units on the road and a vast network of over 2,020 charging stations. However, while these figures underscore the growing popularity of EVs, they also highlight the disparity between ambition and readiness. Malaysia, like many other nations, is still navigating infrastructural gaps, energy mix challenges, and consumer hesitations surrounding EV adoption.
"Electrified mobility is undoubtedly the future," says Benjamin Nagel, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia. "However, the journey to that future is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The mobility needs of individuals will continue to be shaped by a variety of technologies and powertrains. That is why we believe in technology openness and the power of choice."
