If you are of a certain age and grew up in the 80s, you may remember the phrase: “I’m going to Romania for the holidays” being bandied about at the end of the school term – the punchline, of course, being that you were actually going to ‘remain here’ for the holidays.
This “joke” was the cause of much mirth for a 10-year-old, I can assure you. Back then, there was no Instagram to tell me that some kids my age went on planes (what, they even had passports?!) and tootled off to Greece to escape the South African winter. More often than not, like my friends and neighbours, we mostly stayed home for the holidays.
