"A common response to my book launch is: ‘So, how’s the book doing?’ Why the f*** do you care about how the book is doing? Why don’t you f****** read the book and tell me how you liked it?”
A minute into the conversation, and I am already terrified to admit I haven’t read Kubbra Sait’s new book yet. As I bite my lip and wait to be admonished, the green-eyed actor continues to deliver a life lesson while sitting on the floor of her apartment instead of the cushy couch behind her.
“We all want to follow herd mentality, do nothing for ourselves, and then ask, why is the world brutal to us?! Because we’re doing what the rest of the world is doing,” she finishes with a chuckle, surprising and endearing me at the same time with her candour.
My admission earns me two things: predictably, a couple of (wee) reprieves, and more astonishingly, a first-hand, run-through of Open Book: Not Quite a Memoir, which Kubbra rushes off to get once she learns my truth.
As she settles down with the book, Kubbra admits that there was no set plan to write it. A barrage of explanations tumble out, and it all seems to make sense. “I decide on doing something after I am in it. This is just like going skydiving... only while getting onto the plane would it occur to me what I am doing,” she says, adding how she felt it was very natural and liberating to write her story. “I just felt it was a good time to revisit the moments that shaped me into the person I am today...it was a nice, little hunt for stories and there were no holds barred.”
