In a recent interview, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar revealed how his son, Aarav often gets his clothes from secondhand stores. The clip went viral, with many asking why someone from such an affluent background would even turn their eyes towards thrift stores. Surely, the pricing is not an issue. What drives him or his ilks to the idea of secondhand clothing is not the inability to pay premium prices for brand-new clothes. It's something else, either the environmental concern that drives them to adopt conscious consumption or simply the prestige associated with exquisite clothing of the past. In a world oversaturated with fast fashion and mass-manufactured clothing brands, vintage fashion, thus, is having its moments under the sun.
And it's not just celebs and star kids driving up the demand, even the common populace has understood the allure of having timeless clothes in their wardrobe.
From retro-inspired denim to aristocratic corsets, the appeal of old-school has never been stronger. Nostalgia, too, plays an important role here. For a punk aficionado, getting their hands on a worn-out denim and leather jacket transports them to the '70s when Sex Pistol and The Clash reigned supreme. In that way, fashion, where, transience is the predominant law, and the enduring allure of vintage fashion lies in its timeless appeal.
