AUSTRALIA POST UNDER PRESSURE

With fewer of us putting pen to paper, Australia Post has announced it is reducing its daily letter delivery service to every second day in a shakeup aimed at combating financial losses.

Fifteen years ago, the average Australian household received around eight letters a week. Today it's down to only 2.4 letters and, depressingly, most of what is being delivered are bills and bank statements. It's predicted we're likely to get just one letter a week within five years.

The changes to letter delivery will be rolled out over the next 12 to 18 months.

Australia Post CEO Paul Graham has assured Aussies that "urgent mail" will continue to be a priority and "delivered as it always has".

"The reforms announced ... do nothing to diminish our unwavering commitment to the service and support we provide across Australia," he added.
