Rado’s partnership with visionary Japanese fashion designer Kunihiko Morinaga first began in 2017. A fruitful collaboration dedicated to the unconventional, the latest release from this melding of minds sees the brand’s renowned mastery of materials intersect with the avant-garde designer’s love of colour-changing technology. The Rado True Square x Kunihiko Morinaga Special Edition watch features a cleanly transparent dial that, in true Morinaga style, undergoes the photochromic treatment—its colour shifting depending on the available light. Here, we get some insight from the man himself on the making of this remarkable piece of horology.

What is your relation to time/watches?

Time has the power to change values that are thought to be unchangeable. Time could also be the source of the ‘magic’ that erases the boundaries between the ordinary and the extraordinary, the boundaries that seem to be contradictory.

Rado is known as a pioneer in material innovation—how important are materials in your work as a designer?

New materials create new clothes. That leads to creating new fashion.
