“I have spent most of my professional life working for equality, inclusive development and sustainable peace,” notes Noeleen Heyzer. A former under-secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), the social scientist was the highest-ranking Singaporean in the UN system during her term from 2007 to 2014. She was the first woman to serve as the executive secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the first woman from outside North America to head the UN Development Fund for Women (now known as UN Women) to foster women’s empowerment and gender equality.
