The G20 is the premier intergovernmental global forum representing around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the worldwide trade, and two-thirds of the world population. Founded in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a forum for the finance ministers and heads of central banks to discuss financial and economic cooperation and later after the 2007 global financial crisis was upgraded to the level of head of the state. Designated as the "premier forum for international economic cooperation in 2009, it has generated pathways of cooperation to reform multilateral institutions, climate change, infrastructure and resolution of geopolitical divisions and conflicts. The G20 is like a ground zero for devising cooperation for mitigating geopolitical divisions and developing the requisite capacity for shared global challenges.
The G20 India Presidency Initiatives
The G20 India Presidency with 200 meetings in 32 sectors spread all over multiple locations of the country, has produced overwhelming enthusiasm and raised the expectation to deal with the problem the world is grappling with. The Presidency with its theme 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' or 'One Earth, One Family, One Future' has given the strong message "for unity of purpose and unity of action." to take on such shared global challenges as pandemic, economic uncertainty, terrorism and geopolitical conflicts and associated debilitating consequences. Prime Minister Modi emphatically remarked that "The lotus in the logo of G20 is a symbol of hope in such tough times."
