CAMBRIDGE City Football Club is 108 years old but everything about it these days is new.
As I arrive to interview player-manager Jamie Cureton, he is inspecting the alignment of the newly painted goal line with the posts on their new pitch, at their new ground, with his almost entirely new squad doing stretches on the halfway line ahead of training for their first game in a brand new division.
Cureton enjoyed an illustrious playing career with Norwich City in 1993-94, then of the Premier League, and taking in Bristol Rovers, Reading, Colchester United and Exeter City among others.
He won the EFL Championship Golden Boot in 2006-07 with Colchester, and then went on to play and then manage in Non-League with the likes of Bishop’s Stortford, Enfield FC and Maldon & Tiptree. Indeed, he remains the only player to have scored in each of the top ten tiers of English football.
All told, Cureton has played competitively for the past 31 seasons, scoring an eye-popping 351 goals. He has registered to play again this season “as cover”, but how long does he think he can go on for?
“I might as well push it as far as I can. The longer it’s gone on, the more I’ve thought, ‘Okay, it’d be quite special to turn out at 50’,” which, to mark your cards, means the August Bank Holiday fixtures of the 2025-26 season.
