Champions Cup draw suits Bears
The Rugby Paper|June 25, 2023
BRISTOL Bears sneaked into the Champions Cup through the cat flap rather than the back door, but they will be more content with their pool draw than Sale, who pushed Saracens all the way in last month’s Twickenham final.

Champions Cup draw suits Bears

The Bears, who finished ninth in the Premiership but were elevated to the Champions Cup after the demise of London Irish, will face Connacht, the province lock Joe Joyce and coach John Muldoon have this summer swapped Ashton Gate for, Semi Radradra’s Lyon, Bordeaux-Begles and the Bulls.

It is a demanding set of fixtures, but the Sharks’ return for finishing second in the Premiership is a group that contains holders La Rochelle, the team they defeated in May’s final, Leinster, as well as previous finalists Stade Francais and the United Rugby Championship runners-up, the Stormers.

The format has changed for next season with four groups of six teams rather than two tables of 12. Each team has four fixtures and avoids the side in its pool from the same league, which in Bristol’s case is Saracens.

HAVING reported on Italy since the early 1990s, I wouldn’t hesitate to nominate the current crop as the strongest all-round Azzurri squad in modern history … but I’m not sure yet whether they are the best Italy side ever.

French stars need to get on the same page

HOW will France respond in Rome after losing to England? I don’t believe that French supporters will be feeling that charitable towards their own team after their defeat at Twickenham, and will want to see the record set straight against Italy this afternoon.
