Senior coroner Anne Pember issued a request to Anne Sacoolas last year, inviting her to attend the hearing remotely but its first day was told yesterday that the offer "has not been taken up" by the American.

Harry's heartbroken mother Charlotte Charles labelled Sacoolas's no-show decision as both "incomprehensible" and "disrespectful".

Instead Sacoolas's written evidence will be read to the inquest in Sessions House, Northampton, today in the form of a "significant statement", alongside segments from her police interview and a witness statement written last December.

Sacoolas's lawyer Ben Cooper KC said she had previously given a "full account" to police and taken "full responsibility for her actions".

He said she had "provided everything she could to help this inquest" and offered to "answer any further questions".
