TRIBUTES poured in last night for swimming legend David Wilkie MBE after the former Olympic champion died, aged 70, following a battle with cancer.
Dubbed a "pioneer" of the sport and widely acknowledged as Scotland's greatest swimmer, Wilkie's crowning moment came at the 1976 Montreal Games, where he became the first British male to win gold in the pool for 68 years, storming to the 200m breaststroke title and shattering the world record by three seconds.
Born in Sri Lanka to Scottish parents, Wilkie was sent back to boarding school in Edinburgh aged 11, and it was there the youngster honed his talent.
Fittingly, he won his first major taking honour at the 1970 200m Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, in the bronze breaststroke before turning that into a gold in the same event four years later.
