Home Office offers Farage protection after second attack

Officials are understood to be offering at-risk candidates private security teams for campaign events in the run-up to the General Election.

This includes door staff and teams of up to four people for canvassing and public meetings.

Police chiefs fear the level of hatred directed towards politicians could lead to another attack.

The Home Office is understood to have contacted Mr Farage about "additional private security" after he was targeted at two campaign events within days of each other.

However, sources said there would not be "dedicated police support" for Mr Farage.

On Tuesday he was narrowly missed by objects thrown as he stood on the open top deck of his campaign bus at a rally in Barnsley, South Yorks. Yesterday Josh Greally, 28, was charged with using threatening, abusive, insulting words and behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence.
