Charlie Mellish fought in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and was given the French Legion d'honneur five years ago for his bravery on the battlefield.
He had celebrated turning 100 in January, and never forgot the horrors of the war.
Scared
In 2019, after receiving the Legion d'honneur medal, the highest French order of merit, he said: "Many of my officers and fellow soldiers were injured and lost that day.
"I crawled along the trenches that had been created by the tanks and wagons across the battlefield."
