EARHART 'LOST PLANE' RIDDLE

THE hunt for Amelia Earhart's final resting place has taken a dramatic twist after images thought to show her plane on the Pacific sea bed were found to be of a rock formation instead.

The aviator is believed to have perished when her plane ran out of fuel and ditched in the Pacific in 1937 as she tried to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the globe.

In January this year, marine robotics firm Deep Sea Vision sparked excitement when they announced that Amelia's plane, a twin-engine Lockheed Electra, was "believed to be found".

The sonar image taken by an underwater drone showed a crossshaped object, not unlike an aircraft.
