SIR lan McKellen has given his first interview since his terrifying fall from the stage of a show in London's West End, revealing how his fat suit prevented him from suffering even more serious injures.

The acting legend, 85, chipped a vertebrae and fractured his wrist when he fell during his performance as Sir John Falstaff in Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre in June.

Sir Ian, who has starred in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the X-Men franchise on the big screen, said he had been left with "agonising" pain and been too nervous to go out in case someone barged into him and made it worse.

He said: "My chipped vertebrae and fractured wrist are not yet mended.
