Storm Henk in full force, with travel and NYE events hit hard

GALES and major flooding took the fizz out of New Year's Eve celebrations for many, with travel misery and firework displays scrapped.

After thousands were left stranded over the weekend when Eurostar was hit by the deluges, severe storms in southern England and Wales caused more disruption.

Parts of the rail network were hugely affected, while the force of Storm Henk has caused major ferry delays between Dover and France.

Plymouth's Winter Wonderland event and the fireworks display in Barnstaple, Devon, both had to be cancelled due to safety fears.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for "frequent heavy showers in the North West of England through the night until 6am today, saying "delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely".
