ENGLAND brought down the curtain on a golden generation of ODI cricket with yet another World Cup horror show – perhaps their worst of the lot. 

A fourth loss of the tournament to their World Cup bogey side Sri Lanka puts hopes of a semi-final in the bin, although mathematically they must wait a little longer for confirmation.

In reality, emotionally, philosophically and in any cricketing sense they are done, losing by eight wickets in another thrashing, this time masterminded by former England coach Chris Silverwood.

Bowled out for 156 in only 33.2 overs, with 100 balls unused, Sri Lanka reached the target with more than 24 overs to spare on an embarrassing night for English cricket.

In fact this has been an embarrassment of a tournament for the defending champions, who have been so far off the pace you have to wonder if they are staging some kind of protest against 50-over game.
