BACK ON THE BEAT

ONE of Britain’s first ever female police drivers has visited her old Edinburgh beat again – 70 years after she began her career.

Mary d’Arcy Kincaid, 91, spotted an advert in 1956 looking to recruit coppers.

It had been intended for male applicants but no gender was specified – so she applied.

She met the chief inspector and was accepted on to the training programme.

Mary then became one of only four women from Scotland to take up a 12-month secondment in Cyprus where she assisted with the recruitment and training of female officers there. While there Mary was promoted to sergeant, before returning to Edinburgh in 1958.
