THE BBC's decision to back Brendan O'Carroll over his racist "joke" has sparked fury.

And there was further outrage when it emerged a black member of staff quit over the offensive gag while the Mrs Brown's Boys star was given a final warning and allowed to keep his job.

The junior worker was said to be horrified at O'Carroll's N-word jibe during a cast read-through of the Christmas special last Wednesday.

One on-set source said: "How is it that they are no longer on the show but Brendan is? The whole thing is messed-up." Performing arts and entertainment trade union Equity added: "No working person should be subjected to racism when doing their job.

"Employers must realise the obligations they have and create safe, anti-racist workplaces."

Creative industry union Bectu head Philippa Childs said: "Broadcasters must deal swiftly and effectively with unacceptable behaviour, and walk the walk in stamping out racism."

Pressure is building on the BBC to explain why they decided not to sack O'Carroll, who plays Agnes Brown in the show.

A Corporation source said: "The BBC takes the matter extremely seriously and Brendan also takes the matter extremely seriously. Brendan is under no illusion about this. We have made it clear what the consequences of any future issues would be."
