THE chief executive of Caledonian MacBrayne is stepping down after the ferry operator was it by a string of problems.

Robbie Drummond paid the price after CalMac's aging fleet caused delays and disruption on its routes off the west coast of Scotland.

Problems were compounded by delays to two ferries being built at Ferguson Marine in Port Glasgow.

The vessels, which will serve routes in the west with CalMac, are six years late and will cost around three times the original £97million price.

Drummond's departure comes over a week after the chief executive of the state-owned shipyard Ferguson Marine, David Tydeman, was sacked by its board.
