DISTANCE is the only barrier getting in the way of Niko Katic's friendship with his old Rangers buddy Borna Barisic these days.
But the former Gers favourite reckons the rivals looking to pinch his best-mate's left-back slot have miles of their own to make up if they want to oust the Croat.
With Barisic out of contract this summer, gaffer Philippe Clement has a major decision on his hands. Signed from Osijek in 2018 by Steven Gerrard, the 31-yearold has had as many ups and downs as any player since but he's been in fabulous form since the new Belgian boss' October arrival.
Ridvan Yilmaz has been unable to shift him out of the team on a lasting basis and now looks to be closing in on a move to Verona.
Rumours in Italy suggest former Hibs star Josh Doig has been sounded out about making the move in the opposite direction.
But as far as Katic is concerned, there's only one man for the job.
The centre-back, now at FC Zurich, told Record Sport: "I still speak with Borna a lot.
"When we moved to Glasgow we became so close. We lived in the same building and spent every day together. That friendship has continued since I left.
"Borna's a top player. He's been playing for almost six years consistently at a high level.
"That's not down to luck. He's done it consistently for a long time.
"I'm sure the people at Rangers are aware of his qualities and would like to keep him for another two or three years.
"In Europe he always performs I've spoken with Borna and he's enjoying it under Clement, so they will make a new deal. With all due respect to those two. Doig and Yilmaz, Borna is miles ahead.
