Advisers urge ministers to tax gas guzzlers extra

GAS-GUZZLING 4x4s may be targeted to reduce CO2 emissions, Scottish Government advisers say.

The SNP-Greens have vowed to explore measures such as road user charging as part of efforts to cut car use by 20 per cent by 2030.

That could see motorists charged under a pay-as-you-drive tolling system based on time or distance and factors including fuel type.

In a report shared exclusively with the Record, Scotland's Just Transition Commission urged Environment Reporter any taxes raised by such schemes to be invested to boost public transport and help those currently most disadvantaged by the transport system.
