IT'S A WIN FOR BIN THE VAPES

HUMZA Yousaf will today announce a crackdown on single-use vapes which could lead to a total ban on their sale.

The First Minister will reveal new moves to protect the environment and young people from the disposable plastic items which have caused a litter menace across the country.

The move marks a major victory for the Daily Record Bin the Vapes campaign calling for the plastic items to be axed.

We have exposed how our streets and beaches have become dumping grounds for single-use vapes. An official report estimated that about two-thirds of users are under 25 and the devices also pose a fire risk, particularly in landfill sites.

Yousaf is set to announce a consultation on a vapes ban during his first Programme for Government address at Holyrood today, where he lays out his plans for the year. A ban on their sale will be one of the options in a consultation which is expected to come before legislation at Holyrood.

One environmental campaigner said: "We are hoping for good news from the Scottish Government. We feel we have had a good hearing from ministers and officials, and are optimistic about what the day will bring.

Another campaigner said Yousaf has no choice but to address the huge problem.

They said: "I think it is absolutely certain he will act. Everyone knows single use vapes are a scourge and have to be dealt with.
