Scots ex-Marine blasted twice by drunk pirate during Amazon trip record attempt

A FORMER Royal Marine was shot by a pirate drunk on rum during a world record attempt to navigate the Amazon River by canoe. 

John Bathgate, from Edinburgh, is seen calmly telling a camera “I’ve been shot twice” and showing a bullet’s entry into his knee and out of his thigh.

John, 35, and ex-Marine Ian “Yan” Roberts, 34, who fought off their attacker in a terrifying tussle, were previously kidnapped twice.

They were aiming to be the first to travel from the highest source of the Amazon – the Volcan Chimborazo glacier in Ecuador – to the Atlantic coast.

They have postponed the 3168mile journey to Belem, Brazil, conceived by John’s dad David, 82.
