MURDER ON KIDS' WARDS: FAMILY RELIVING HORROR
A MUM and dad whose daughter almost died in an attack by child-killing nurse Beverley Allitt in 1991 say they have been traumatised by the Lucy Letby case.
Like many of Letby’s victims, Kayley Asher, then 15 months old, was injected with air.
Her mum Sharon, 63, said: “This Letby case has brought it all back. Why weren’t lessons learned? This has all happened before.”
Kayley’s lungs collapsed and she suffered two cardiac arrests after the attack by “Angel of Death” Allitt.
Allitt was given 13 life sentences in 1993 for killing four babies and harming nine others at the Grantham and Kesteven Hospital.
Sharon, who still lives in Grantham, Lincolnshire, said: “Allitt was killing in plain sight and what she did went totally unnoticed.
“This Letby case has brought it all back. My husband just shields Kayley from it.”
She said Kayley, now 33, was “terrified” of Letby who, on Monday, refused to attend court to be given a whole life term for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six more at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire.
Sharon said: “Lessons have not been learnt from Grantham. Kayley has found it very difficult.
“She’s even asked if this nurse will come and get her. She has special needs so she can’t quite gather that they are talking about two separate people. She’s terrified.
“She was worried when they said Letby would not appear in court for sentencing.
“She was worried she would come out and get her that weekend. I had to explain to her that she would still be locked up.”
